Thanks to your generous support and donations, we have succeeded in building a much-needed solar passive study hall for the students of the REWA Buddhist Model School in the Spiti Valley. This project has transformed the children’s lives in a sustainable way – and for that, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude! 💛
Extreme Conditions that Hinder Education
The REWA School is located at over 3,500 meters above sea level in a region with extreme climatic challenges. Winters are harsh and snowy, with temperatures dropping to as low as -20 degrees. Even in summer, nighttime temperatures rarely rise above freezing. These conditions make daily school life extremely difficult for both students and teachers. Before the new hall was built, up to 150 children had to squeeze into a single room that provided neither enough space nor sufficient protection from the cold. The lack of warmth and the cramped conditions severely affected concentration and learning.
A Space that Provides Warmth and Security
The new solar passive study hall now offers students a bright, passively heated, and spacious place to learn, play, and grow. Large glass windows and a translucent roof provide natural daylight and passively generated warmth. Even on the coldest days, the room remains comfortably warm – without additional daytime energy use. The new room is more than a classroom: it is a safe place where children can play and even bathe in a protected environment. In addition, it expands the school’s infrastructure with an upper floor, creating urgently needed space.
Sustainability and Future Perspectives
This project goes beyond simply providing warmth. It is a model for sustainable educational infrastructure that raises awareness among children about environmentally friendly technologies and inspires them to actively participate in building a sustainable future.
